Tamara Barney began her legal career in 1994 with the Alameda County (California) Public Defender's Office, where she tried twenty cases to verdict and handled a full caseload of clients whose charges included felony drug use and distribution, assault and battery, burglary, robbery, weapons possession, assault with deadly weapons, child molestation, fraud and car theft. In 2002, Ms. Barney became Of Counsel first to Gescheidt & O'Brien, and then in 2003 to MacFadyen, Gescheidt & O'Brien, where she is involved in all aspects of federal and state criminal defense and appellate work. Ms. Barney also represents clients involved in civil litigation.
Since 2002, Ms. Barney has served on the Criminal Justice Act (CJA) First
Circuit Panel, where she represents indigent clients on appeal before
the First Circuit Court of Appeals. In addition, she serves on the Committee
for Public Counsel Services in Massachusetts, where she provides trial
representation to indigent persons contesting petitions seeking commitment
to public or private psychiatric facilities or judicial authorization
to administer antipsychotic medication.
