B. Jean Rosiello has devoted most of her career to trial and appellate litigation in state and federal courts, specializing in analysis, research and writing. She has researched and written briefs with John A. MacFadyen since the early 1990's. Recently, she was co-counsel for a hospital executive before the First Circuit Court of Appeals, winning reversal of a conviction for alleged aiding and abetting of honest services mail fraud. United States v. Urciuoli, et al., 513 F.3d 290 (1st Cir. 2008). On retrial, Ms. Rosiello provided analysis and legal memoranda for the trial court, leading to the executive's acquittal. She acted as co-counsel before the Rhode Island Supreme Court in recent lead paint litigation which vacated a multi-billion dollar verdict against her client and resulted in a seminal decision on the scope of public nuisance law in relation to products liability. State v. Lead Industries Association, et al., 951 A.2d 428 (R.I. 2008). For many years prior to 1990, she represented public employee unions in proceedings in court and in arbitration.
Ms. Rosiello has also devoted a large portion of her career to public service. She started in 1974 as an attorney for Pine Tree Legal Services, providing low-income legal counsel in a wide range of civil matters. She has represented battered women pro bono, and provided services to battered women's shelters. As Deputy General Counsel for the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, she oversaw the investigation and ultimate banning of urea-formaldehyde-based foam insulation. She also supervised attorneys regulating nursing homes and other long-term care facilities. Today, she represents the George Wiley Center (an anti-poverty advocacy organization), litigating issues concerning utility rates and termination procedures before the Public Utilities Commission, as well as drafting and lobbying for related legislation.
